Gotta ask........

I can remember a couple of the "cheers" we shouted out at football games....one of them went "push 'em back, push 'em back, 'way back" I think.   Another one, and I hope I'm not dreaming this up, ended up with "elskie nelskie eeten skeeten Pasadena can't be beaten" or similar words.  There were probably other cheers we did but none come to mind.

Can anyone confirm or deny?

I remember... Lean to the right, lean to the left, stand up, sit down, fight fight fight

Wasn't there another one that was something like ... Go ye mighty bulldogs,

I'm sure the cheer leaders remember these better. A rap before we knew what rap was;

Cheer guy: Now listen my friends and you shall hear... crowd repeats

Cheer guy: Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere....crowd repeats

Cheer guy: He rode up the alleys and down the streets...crowd repeats

Everyone: Yelling Pasadena High School can't be beat!

Another one went something like:  Everywhere we go, people want to know, who we are, so we tell them. We are the Bulldogs, mighty, mighty Bulldogs.

Thanks for bringing up those wonderful cheers - for the record to complete Barry's memories - "Woo wooski, watten datten - la datten sis...

"Push 'em back" cheer has a special memory for me - At the very first pep rally of the season, Beck Sanborn and Johnny Jackson got suspended for smoking in the bathroom (how innocent it seems now) leaving Jane Scurr, Cheryl Osti and I to lead the cheers in the Rose Bowl that evening game. Jane and Cheryl didn't want to go to the mike so I led the cheer - Push em back, push 'em back - waayyyyy back - when a football player came off the field to the mike and called me a "dumb broad" and said we were trying for first down.  As I watched the crowd start to laugh I promptly changed the cheer to "First Down...Touch Down!  somewhat mitigating my embarrassment.

I will be bringing my megaphone to the 50th and if Jane, Cheryl, Beck and john will join in maybe we'll cheer you guys on through memory lane.

I hope to post a picture soon of my daughter, my grand daughter and I all in our respective cheerleader uniforms... Once a cheerleader - always a cheerleader!

Very amusing recollection, Camay. I don't care all that much for PHS stuff, but I actually laughed out loud.

Anne Hassell (Nelson)

Thanks Camay - I knew you would post something about the cheers. When fall approaches and school begins again, this always conjures up memories of PHS games, song girls, cheer leaders, band, and drill team. We were all so blessed to have had such special experiences. It would be fun to somehow remember those experiences at the 50th. Too bad we didn't have video then. I liked your comment about always cheer leaders. My daughter and grand daughter followed in my steps too. My Rebekah even became an NFL Cheer Leader for the chargers for two years and then the Forty-niners for two years. I didn't know it, but those cheer girls have to be working in a professional field as well as dance well. Keep those comments coming. I enjoy them.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for filling in the blanks in my cheers memory, and especially to Camay for confirming that "woo wooskie" one.   I do remember that was the cheer that I didn't understand what all the words meant but we shouted it out with enthusiasm and conviction anyway.   Like the Beach Boys told us in song, "Be True to Your School"

Barbara Bell (Dwyer)

Thanks Camay. Wasn't there another male PHS cheerleader...Jerry King I think?

I hope Beck and Johnny were able to get those suspensions taken off of their PERMANENT RECORDS.

Camay White (Arad-Tullis)

Hi to All! - Barbara - Jerry King was Pep commissioner.  Glad Michael got a laugh out of my cheering mishap!, To Phil... I hope you were kidding about permanent records...by the way, has anyone heard from Beck or Johnny?  Ann - how interesting about the -cheerleading for your daughter and grand daughters... hope you can post some pictures.

As much as I loved being a cheerleader - the memories of the fabulous drill team performing at the games is just incredible.  Does anyone have any "movies" of the performances - maybe they could be digitized and posted?

09/19/16 05:09 AM #404

Philip Denslow

I think it was some kind of urban legend when we were in school, about there being a Permanent Record for each of us. This was reinforced later by references to it on the Wonder Years TV show.

09/19/16 10:40 AM #405

Anne Hassell (Nelson)

Phillip - You are right - records are thrown away all the time. It all matters who you are and how much influence you have. As a retired teacher, students' records are often thrown away. It's all about lawyers and threats and school districts being scared of litigation. The squeeky wheel gets what it wants. I had students whose actions and problems really needed to be documented for the safety of others; but their records were thrown away. When you see on the news that so 'n so did such 'n such and nobody was the wiser it is because the records were thrown away. Back when we were children life was more simple. Simple things like smoking in the bathroom was over-looked. Now it is much different. Innocent students are crucified and terrible actions are over-looked. Crazy - confusing world now!

Please join me in purchasing a Bull Dog shirt.  Part of the purchase price goes to the reunion fund.  Click on Class Store on the left hand side of the web page.

Modie (Martin) Katz

Clay, you look like a fitting model for our class.  I will get a shirt and post it as well.  In fact wouldn't it be a good idea for everyone to get a shirt with the PHS logo and post a picture of themselves on the site?  It would help us raise money for the 50th reunion and help us all identify each other at the reunion.   LET'S DO IT!!!

09/26/16 01:02 PM #408

Anne Hassell (Nelson)

Clay - I like the polo shirt too - good choice. You look so handsome! I'll get one that says drill team. And I also like red.

Anne Hassell (Nelson)

Is anybody interested in going on a short 2 or 3 day cruise on the So coast of CA around the same time as the 50th reunion, or is this just a dream of mine? Crazy or not?

09/27/16 06:13 AM #410

Philip Denslow

Okay!

09/27/16 11:23 AM #411

Modie (Martin) Katz

Phil, looking good. I just ordered mine and will post it as soon as I get it. Tell your other classmates about the CHALLENGE.

09/27/16 01:53 PM #412

Sandra Davenport /Royall (Ulibarri)

Anne, I am always up for a cruise.

09/27/16 02:44 PM #413

Philip Denslow

Right, Modie. We have set up a goal of raising $10,000 to fund our 50th reunion. So far classmates have donated $2,200, which is great. Help us get there! You can see a list of donors and donations by clicking on "Make a Donation" on the left side menu. Here is a graphic that shows our progress:

   P.H.S. 50th CLASS  REUNION

We have organized a schedule and agenda for the 50th class reunion. We will officially begin on

Friday June 22nd 2018.                                                                                                                  We will meet at Pasadena High School at 4:00 P.M. for the removal of the time capsule that was buried 50 years ago. We will examine the contents in the school cafeteria where we will spend the evening. We will have time to renew old friendships and enjoy conversation before our dinner arrives. Old memories will come back quickly as we enjoy an In-N-Out burger just outside at their food truck. Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. Drinks and snacks will also be provided. We will then enjoy the "Drill Team" perform for us and a few cheers from the "Cheerleaders" and "Song Girls". We also hope to have former P.H.S. band members play for us. If budget allows we hope to have a band play "Oldies and favorite tunes" as we dance the night away until midnight. It's time to break-out the the old uniforms, letterman jackets, musical instruments, and anything else that might bring back memories from 1968.

Saturday June 23rd                                                                                                                                 Beginning about 9:30 A.M. we will meet at Victory Park for games, fun, and food. Food trucks will be available for you to purchase your lunch. We will provide soft drinks and snacks. At about 2:00 P.M. we will head back to the hotel in Pasadena (not yet determined) for the main event. A no host bar and appetizers begin at 5:00 PM. Our buffet dinner will begin about 6:30 PM. Entertainment for the evening is still to be determined (Budget). Most of the evening will be yours to renew friendships and reminisce. Pictures and videos will be taken during the evening. Memorabilia will be on display.

Sunday June 24th                                                                                                                                   We will meet at the same hotel and room beginning at 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM for all of us to enjoy a buffet brunch. This event will be our concluding activity for the 50th reunion.

We are now seeking class members for help to serve on one of 5 different committees.

1) Music Committee : Make arrangements for music on Friday and Saturday evening.

2) Entertainment Committee: Organize and make arrangements the Drill Team, Song Girls, Cheerleaders, and Band members to perform.

3) Food Committee : Arrange for food trucks for Friday night (In-N-Out) and multiple choices for Saturday afternoon. Soft drinks and snacks will be needed for Friday night and Saturday at Victory Park. It must be noted that NO alcohol is permitted on school or park grounds.

4) Decorations Committee : Set-up with Bulldog colors and memorabilia for Friday and Saturday. May also arrange for games and prizes for both days.

5) Registration Committee : Arrange for all aspects of entry for the 3 day event including name badges and arrangements for photos, photo booth, and videos.

If you are willing to serve as head of a committee or as a committee member, please let Modie or Clay know. Some of our agenda is dependent on our raising sufficient funds to pay for what we have purposed. If we are to dance the night away on Friday than the type of music will be determined by donations from YOU ! We promise to use the money wisely and for the good of all !!!

PLEASE make a donation to :                                                                                                                 P.H.S. class of 1968                                                                                                                               2212 Paseo Court                                                                                                                                   Las Vegas NV, 89117-2758

P.S. For anyone that will be in the area on Thursday June 21st, 2018, we will meet you at Clearman's North Woods for dinner in San Gabriel. This is not part of the official reunion. Disneyland during the day has also been suggested ? Also a cruise was mentioned.

Joe Silver (Silver)

I am sorry to be the EVIL classmate, but since you wonderful classmates are planning a great 3 day reunion; paying for 3 days of hotel, reunion ticket, and airfare, ; is way beyond my means, I am now on a fixed income  being retired now. Social Security and my small union pension is all I have... I will try and save as much as i can during the 1-1/2 yrs remaining til June of 2018.  Im not a spoil sport but it is a 50th reunion i might miss. Sorry guys.

09/29/16 03:32 PM #416

Anne Hassell (Nelson)

Hey Joe - I feel for you. We are retired too and lost most of our investments in 2008 when my husband became sick. After two bouts with cancer, seizures, and a heart attack, we have suffered a large monetary loss. However, we are lucky to still live in SO. CA. At the last reunion I realized that I was able to spend more time with grads at lunches, breakfasts, and dinners by staying at the same hotel. I found it so valuable to be able to really spend quality time with many people. I am hoping to have the same experience this next time. We went to school with so many wonderful kids who have grown into super people. I love talking with aal of them. It will be worth it to you to save as much money as you can to attend and spend plenty of time with your friends. You are not being negative - just practical. However, just look forward to making fun memories. I look forward to seeing you at the 50th. Just do what you can, and don't worry about having to do anything else.
