Sheryl Dines I used to deliver those Chicken Pot Pies after school & weekends in my '65 bug. Believe the name was Drake's Fine Chicken Pies located near the corner of Allen & Villa, Pasadena. Imagine finding streets and addresses without GPS! My tips were dependent on how fast I was able to deliver & never got a ticket. I believe the only other or closest home made Chicken Pie place was Moffitts located on South Baldwin Ave, Arcadia, also really good. Haven't seen Jefferson Elementary mentioned yet? Lived close enough to Jefferson and Marshall to walk each day with my best friend Robert Newhouse. Lots of things to do between home and school but managed to stay out of trouble most of time, best memories ever. Anyone remember the Hasting's Drive-in? Always got a thumbs-up from friends when asked " Where did you and your girlfriend end up last weekend?"

Richard Curry,

Thanks for info on the Pot Pies, they were so dang big and good, steam coming out the little hole on top and just plain yummy.

Hastings Drive In was the best.  Good movies, laughter, screams of fright, swinging on the swings during intermission, boys slowly slowly reaching their arms around your shoulders.  Almost forgetting several times to remove the sound box from the window. Sitting on the tailgate of truck, feet dangling and just giggling not even watching the movie.  Great memories

Hi Everyone, yes can remember the Standells along with so many other groups!

Thanks in large part to Bob Eubanks, KFWB 980 AM ("Top 30")? and Kasey Kasem, KRLA 1110 AM ("Top 40")?

Too much radio time, never enough homework time....oh well it all worked out fine anyway.

Drive in was most fun when my parents allowed me to take out the Rambler American station wagon and we would back the car into the parking spot. It had a back seat that actually folded down flat to make a deck/bed, so you could watch the movie on your stomach... or not... anyone remember what replaced the Drive In? Was it the 210 freeway, Fedco or ?

Great mini reunion photo -- Thanks for posting, Cheryl.  You all look wonderful and hugs to my Del Vina neighbor, Alice Barrios.

Stephen Lantz If I remember correctly the Hastings' drive-in was converted into a regular walk in theater named the Hastings. I believe their Grand Opening movie was "The Graduate" I certainly enjoyed the movie but recall several parents thinking it contained allot of controversy. Either way it remains a classic for the times.

Hmm, where do I start? so many comments that triggered so many memories.

First, great reunion pic. I do recognize Alice... and Ann? Others look familiar. Can you tell us who they all are?

About the glass bottles of milk being delivered... our milkman used to come into the house, open the refrigerator, and rearrange stuff so his bottles could fit in!  And all the while cheerfully talking to my mom who would be standing there smiling in her bathrobe (no, I look nothing like him...).

Does anyone remember Tiny Naylor's? That's wheremy family went for an occasional burger.

I went to Eugen Field for kindergarten only.  Mrs Rounds, 1955. I should post the class picture and see if anyone reognizes anyone from our PHS class!

I still remember a Halloween show from that time with a giant pumpkin "person" being created before our eyes.. I was thrilled!

All for now....

Laurie

To Stephen -- As someone else said, it was the big, new, modern Hastings Theater that replaced the old drive-in, in '68.  I don't remember for sure, but I think it was just one big spacious auditorium that rivaled any in Hollywood.  I think Cinerama movies could play there.  Huge curved screen, great projection and sound. The curtains would close after the previews, then open again before the main movie.  So grand.  I remember seeing Poseidon Adventure there, as well as Jaws and many others.  Very impressive and memorable experiences.  Sadly, the theater was broken into several smaller "cineplex" theaters, then closed and sat empty for years.  It was finally razed only a year or two ago to build a fitness center, if I recall.

Hi Everyone,

As we celebrate our virtual 50th Jr High School reunions, here are some excerpts from the 1965 Wilson Jr High graduation program (thanks Mom and Dad for having the foresight to save things that might be meaningful later in life):

June 17, 1965   Principal:  Mr. George McNeish

Class Pres:  Stan Lazarian, VP:  William Cameron, Sec: Jean Hatfield, Treas: Rosa Young

The Flag Salute was led by Don Franzen, Invocation by Wyatt Dietrich, Welcome by Stan Lazarian, two speeches, both titled "The Future is for Those Who Are Prepared" by Dale Eichner and James (Buddy?) Reed.

Appears as if there were about 450 of us that graduated that day.

In addition to "Land of Hope and Glory", we sang "The Old Oaks at Wilson"...lyrics are printed on the program so I didn't have to remember them 50 years later:

When memories of Wilson come back to us all,

With pictures of classroom and campus and hall,

Of all the world's beauty, there's none can compare,

With the lofty old oak trees that sheltered us there.

Chorus:

The old oaks at Wilson, so time swept and hoary,

Their branches outspread 'neath the soft southern sky,

Their beauty shall mingle in song and in story,

Those grand old oaks, those dear old oaks, at Wilson High.

There are more details in the program, if anyone is interested in specifics.

As to radio stations, how about KPPC (Pasadena Presbyterian Church; the basement.....)   One of the first underground FM radio stations.  I was nerdily interested in the radio equipment and hung out there.  I remember Lou Reed being interviewed....

Never dreamed I'd get caught up in this forum... but it is a fun diversion.  Two radio station IDs that stand out in my memory:  Can't sing the tune here, but how about "93 KHJ... plays more music! "  And, sung/harmonized real slowly, "K... F... W... B.... channel ninety-eight."

I remember Tiny Naylor's quite well.  There was a restaurant in a very old brick building over on the west side of Pasadena, not far from the public library, called Hutch's Kitchen, if I recall the name.  It had sawdust all over the floor, and I think unlimited unshelled peanuts that you could crack open at your table and throw the shells on the floor.  You could get food to go, too, and their really juicy burgers were to die for.  I can taste them now.

I also was in Mrs. Rounds 1955 kindergarden class at Field Elementary School.  IIRC, there was a morning and an afternoon class, so she probably had 2 classes.  I've got a pix of the class somewhere, so I'll have to post it.  The year before we moved from Upper Hastings Ranch to the new house just below Faith Lutheran Church on Hastings Ranch Drive.  I was the only kid on the street who had a back fence gate to the big lot next to Field where the Nazarene Church now sits.  What a great place to play!  In the Spring the lot would be full of mustard plants and quite often you'd see a few older asian couples picking mustard greens!

Pasadena is still a great place to live, and you can see Catalina Island from my driveway (sometimes, when there isn't too much smog in the flatlands).  I'm still up in Upper Hastings Ranch.  The market on the corner of MIchillinda and Sierra Madre is now vacant due to the owner of the property, but I can still remember when the TV Comic Hosts would make personal appearances there in the 50's and 60's - Engineer Bill, Skipper Frank, Tom Hatten, and the Clysdale Horses.

Also, hanging out in front of the Huntington Hotel bungalo where KRLA was broadcasting from.  IIRC, on Saturday nights they'd play a top 10 countdown on the outside loudspeaker, with the #1 song being played right before curfew time!

....Rolling marbles down between the seats in the PHS auditorium....Gary Bloom picking up the end of a pergola lunch table and sliding everyone and their lunches down into a pile....Mrs Harding and her ruler checking the length of girls skirts!!  Mr. Craft's size gazillion tennis shoe with which he on occasion gave a swat!!

It was a diffrent time!

I don't recall the name of restaurant your saying but do recall the sawdust on floor n peanut shells
My step mother wouldn't allow throwing on floor, had to make a neat pile. Threw on floor as I left. Ha!
It is fun reading about everyone's memories
Anyone remember the boy asking you to go steady and then he gave you a St Christopher?

Gary - I spent some time at KRLA.  They let us go in and watch the broadcasts.  I met Casey Cassum and Dave Hull and Bob Eubanks.  Bob Eubanks owned a horse tack store in Canoga Park later on where I used to shop.  I rode a horse in the Rose Parade in the mid 70's and Bob Eubanks knew someone I rode with and talked about her and us on the TV when he was commentating.  Gee - famous.

I recall Hutch's peanut oil french fries - yummy. Also recall seeing "How the West Was Won" at the new Hastings Ranch Theatre on Christmas afternoon with my best friend Ed Powell... what a star-filled spectacular saga (today it would probably be a mini-series on some off-brand cable channel). Anyone remember the summer season strawberry pies from House of Pies? My roommate while I was at PCC was the chief engineer responsible for converting KPPC from a 5K watt Sunday morning religious station to the nation's first underground radio station. I spent many a night holding the other end of wires while he built the new studios on Oak Knoll. A few years ago, I took my daughter and her friend to the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock. In the museum at Yasgar's Farm (the site of the event) the first panel pays tribute to the era with an acknowledgement that KPPC in Pasadena, California was the first radio station in the nation to capture the new culture... Those a bit younger would experience the next transition of the radio station to KROQ.

Have not been back in the Pasadena / Sierra Madre area in several decades.  You guys sure bring back a lot of memories of things and places outside of PHS.  Janice, my parents use to take us to the Northwoods Inn.  That was a real treat.   One of my favorite places to eat was IN-N-OUT burgers.  Unfortunately, they are not up here in Washington State.  Whenever we visit California / Bay Area, I always have to eat at IN-N-OUT...

Mr. Paul Adler...........................Well now that is quite a story! Gasoline & cherry bombs just don't mix. All those homes bought out by the state for the 210 freeway were built in the '20s complete with asbestos painted walls, lead pipes, screw-in type fuses (which one could temporarily replace with a penny), and of course those modern silent mercury light switches. Paul, last I heard the ones responsible were last seen leaving the area on a Honda S-90, so I heard. Those were some adventurous / rebelliously crazy times. I know there were several classmates who grew up in that area attending Thomas Jefferson Elementary, any stories?

Wally Moon "shots" into the left field screen.  The Duke trying to cover that huge center field.  the older Carl Furillo in right, and Gill Hodges on first.  You bet i remember the 58-61 Dodgers!!

Yup. Went once on a bus with my grandfather and his Civitan buddies and another time in a carpool. Da Bums lost both games, but it sure beat laying on the carpet in front of the radio and listening to the game. That short left field added to the drama of every at bat. Wasn't the first experience at Dodger Stadium miraculous by comparison... baseball heaven for a little leaguer.
