Gary, please call me 503-997-3631 ASAP.
Clay Werts I have some good news for you.
I need to track down the photos of Hastings Ranch from about 1952 when my parents were selecting their lot to build a house (at top of Tropical Avenue). There was nothing there at the time so they got lucky and got the corner lot and convinced the builders to move the garage to the back of the lot. Found memories of having our street start the tradition of having Christmas decorations on the trees by the street. Remember how many people crowded the streets during the Christmas season? Also am remembering the time we had to evacuate Don Benito because of the fires in the hills. And remembering how terrible it was to leave the security of elementary school and be bused to the big scary John Marshall Jr. High where the teachers all seemed to be mean. Was it just me? It didn't help to have a bad haircut, glasses and a violin during those years. It was before being a nerd was popular!

Dear Laurie,
I have really enjoyed your input into the website conversation of our classmates from the Class of 1968 from PHS. I have enjoyed your ‘fresh’ input as to where you were at that time in your life. I was probably from the opposite end of the spectrum – conservative, fully engaged in student activities, sports, etc., but anyway…
When you posted the pix of your kindergarten class from November ’55, well, I was the guy missing from that picture. At the time, and for the next 30 years, my Father was the minister at Faith Lutheran Church at the corner of Sierra Madre Blvd. and Hastings Ranch Drive; we lived in the parsonage just below from 1954 to 1959, at which time my folks purchased the home which I now own in Upper Hastings Ranch at 1015 Medford! I was gone the day that the fall kindergarten pictures were taken, so I was not in them! But, I do remember some of the faces, and Robbie Lambert was a good friend of mine until his family moved up into La Canada around 1960; his father was a surgeon and had assisted on a surgery of mine in 1954! Robbie and I played a few years on the same little league team in Hamilton Park!!
So, I called the records section of the Pasadena Unified School District to find if they had any records of classroom rosters from that time period; they only have kept student records! If there is any way of identifying anyone else from that pix, then they had either left the area or were with us in 1968 (hopefully)!
Your professed love of the art world propelled me to seek you out through Google to learn more about your creative nature – WOW! I am thoroughly impressed at your artwork – paintings, photography, etc. BTW, I am not, or have ever been an internet stalker, just wanted to see more of your creative nature.
My experience with photo journalism was rewarded in 1973, when I was awarded an award for being the outstanding photojournalist in the US Army, for my photographic endeavors in South East Asia, here I had been actually operating in a (still classified) combat mode, but contributing pictures of both classified and unclassified nature to, depending on their nature and classification, to the US Army, and the Bangkok World Post. That war was unforgiveable, but I made many friends in Viet Nam, Cambodia, Thailand and Laos.
If you do visit California over the coming months, I’d like to see you, if you venture to Southern California. I (still) take care of my Mother, who is now 97 years plus, but my time is flexible.
Anyway, got to go, as my two hunting dogs need to venture to Sierra Madre as the evening sky approaches.
I really, really enjoyed your creativity as shown by your photographs and paintings – WOW! I might have even held your hand in Kindergarten….. Remember quiet time, when we got out the sleep mats and had a 30 minute nap!!
With all respect,
Gary Hesse
Btw, You were one of those “Babes” that most guys in High School did not feel secure enough to approach!

Just had mine on the 19th...Happy Birthday Gary...
I was in Sierra Madre and saw a hunting dog pointer pulling someone that looked a little like you?
I'll visit him next time in S.M. I go there at least once a month to work on the property at my rental house on Oak Meadow Rd, where I grew up and love going back to. After each day's work I go uptown and sit out at Lucky Baldwin's with my dog Shana, have a beer, well done fries, and watch the passerbys for any familiar faces...I'll venture down to see if you're at SBucks next time.
Good to know Gary... l0l
